The craft beer phenomenon has blown up in recent years. In B.C. alone, nine microbreweries opened up in 2013 with another 22 slated for this year. Beer lovers may be rejoicing but it begs the question: what does it take to stand out in an increasingly competitive market? To find an answer, we talked to Hoyne Brewing Co.
Brewmaster Sean Hoyne honed his beer making skills for 20 years before opening the Victoria-based brewery back in 2011. He is passionate about his craft, describing it as a balance between history and science, between tradition and technology. Whether you’re after a refreshing Summer Haze Honey Hefe or a Voltage Espresso Stout, Hoyne Brewing has a range of craft beers to quench any customer’s thirst at any time of the year.
Here at Payfirma, we love a good brew, which is why we couldn’t wait to chat with Hoyne’s owner, administrator and self-proclaimed “brew mistress”, Chantal O’Brian, about Hoyne’s success and how they’re using Payfirma to accept and manage their payments.
Tell us about your business, where did it begin and where are you at now?
We’re a microbrewery; we brew all natural, unfiltered craft beer with a focus on quality and taste.
It seems more and more craft breweries are popping up. How does Hoyne set itself apart in this competitive space?
There is a lot of great beer out there and we feel fortunate to be in the craft beer scene at this turning point. We pride ourselves in providing our customers product that is consistent in quality and flavour. We also work with a fabulous graphics team and our labels have a special artistic flare that help reflect who we are not only as a company but who we are as individuals.
Payfirma is proud to be working with Hoyne. Where did you hear about us?
We searched for a service online and received a very personal response with great customer service. Now, we process payments with Payfirma daily.
What Payfirma products are you currently using?
We use the customer vault to bill our vendors across the province. (Hoyne’s beer is available in liquor stores around Greater Victoria, Vancouver Island and the lower mainland, as well as on tap at various pubs and restaurants.) We also use the POS machine for our retail sales in-house.
How has your business grown since processing with Payfirma?
Using Payfirma has definitely been a time saver for the business. The POS machine has been very efficient: no glitches and no breakdowns, which means no time wasted troubleshooting on the phone for hours.

You must try our seasonal-Summer Haze Honey Hefe! It goes great with an orange slice!
